Cambodia Seeks Trump Nobel Nomination for Role in Regional Peace Effort

The government of Cambodia has revealed plans to formally nominate former United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, citing his contribution to easing tensions during a recent border conflict with Thailand. The announcement comes after a ceasefire agreement was reached, ending several weeks of military escalation between the two Southeast Asian nations.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol said Trump played a crucial role in creating the conditions necessary for peaceful dialogue. “His mediation helped restore peace and protect the livelihoods of thousands,” Chanthol stated. Though details of Trump’s involvement have not been fully disclosed, Cambodian officials have credited his engagement with helping both sides step back from confrontation.

The border clashes marked the most serious escalation in over a decade, resulting in casualties and the displacement of civilians living near the disputed area. Under the ceasefire agreement reached last week, both Cambodian and Thai forces have withdrawn. The situation is currently being monitored by regional observers to ensure the terms of the truce are upheld.

In addition to helping prevent further violence, the ceasefire also had significant economic implications. Cambodia’s garment sector, one of the country’s largest industries and a major source of employment, faced potential disruption from the conflict. Cambodian authorities noted that Trump’s involvement contributed to preserving trade stability and shielding the industry from the possibility of increased U.S. tariffs.

The nomination is currently in its preliminary stage and forms part of a legal process governed by the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, which oversees the Nobel Peace Prize. These rules require all nominations to be confidential and independently evaluated. The announcement of Cambodia’s intention to nominate Trump does not imply any support or approval by the Nobel Committee.

Cambodia’s decision aligns it with a small number of countries, including Pakistan and Israel, that have publicly recognized Trump’s participation in international peace efforts. Cambodian officials have made no statements regarding Trump’s broader policies, emphasizing only his direct involvement in the resolution of the border issue.

As of press time, neither the Royal Thai Government nor the United Nations (UN) has issued a formal response to the ceasefire or Cambodia’s intended nomination. Cambodian officials have described the legal action as a recognition of peaceful mediation and international diplomacy.

The move underscores Cambodia’s stated commitment to honoring those who play a role in resolving regional disputes and promoting long-term stability, regardless of political affiliation.
