Trump Sets August 8 Peace Deadline as Zelenskyy Seeks Direct Talks with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has renewed his call for direct negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just as former United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump imposed a firm August 8 deadline for a ceasefire and peace agreement in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war. The diplomatic push arrives amid heightened tensions and continued bloodshed on the battlefield.

In a message posted on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump revealed that two U.S. nuclear submarines were repositioned following what he described as “highly provocative statements” from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who now serves as Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation. “Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences,” Trump wrote. “I hope this will not be one of those instances.”

Speaking at a United Nations (UN) Security Council briefing on the same day, Acting U.S. Representative to the UN, John Kelley, confirmed that both Russia and Ukraine are expected to reach a peace deal by August 8 under Trump’s direction. “President Trump has made clear this must be done by August 8. The United States is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace,” Kelley said.

Kelley underscored America’s steadfast support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and its right to self-defense. He criticized increasing international support for Russia, calling out North Korea and Iran directly for supplying military aid. While China has not supplied weapons, Kelley described it as a “decisive enabler” of Russia’s military-industrial complex by providing key industrial materials.

Russia, for its part, has maintained a consistent position at the diplomatic level. The Russian Mission to the UN claimed it does not seek the destruction of Ukraine, but rather aims to foster “cultural coexistence” between Russians and Ukrainians. However, Moscow’s military actions appear to tell a different story. On Thursday morning, Russian forces launched what Ukrainian officials say was the deadliest airstrike on Kyiv this year. According to Reuters, more than 300 drones and eight missiles were deployed in the assault, killing 31 people, including five children, one of them a two-year-old, and injuring over 150 civilians.

As the August 8 deadline draws near, the world watches closely. Trump’s intervention marks a sharp pivot from traditional diplomatic channels, placing new urgency on both Kyiv and Moscow to reconsider their strategies. Whether this effort results in meaningful negotiations or intensifies the conflict remains to be seen.
