Muqam Signals Possible K-P Government Change

On August 9, 2025, Engineer Amir Muqam, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chapter and Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, stated that a change in the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is a possibility. He said an opposition alliance consisting of 53 Members of the Provincial Assembly could shift the balance of power at an appropriate time. The remarks were made during a condolence visit in Swabi.

Muqam criticized the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government for its lack of willingness to engage in constructive dialogue and expressed PML-N’s readiness to negotiate with all opposition parties. He described PTI-led protests planned for August 14, 2025, Pakistan’s Independence Day, as disruptive to national unity. He also accused the PTI of attempting to create unrest on that day to serve political interests.

The political context for these remarks includes the Supreme Court’s June 27, 2025 ruling, which declared PTI ineligible for reserved seats for women and minorities. As a result, these seats were reallocated to other parties, including PML-N, PPP, and JUI-F. This development increased the opposition’s representation in the provincial assembly.

Following the court’s decision, opposition leaders including Amir Muqam and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Faisal Karim Kundi have held consultations with other opposition members to consider next steps. These discussions have covered legal strategy, governance issues, and public support. No formal motion of no confidence has been announced at this time.

Currently, while the opposition has gained numerical strength, there is no confirmed effort to remove the PTI-led government through a no-confidence vote. Senior PML-N figures have stated that there are no immediate plans to table such a motion, but they have emphasized that the opposition has the constitutional right to act if it secures a majority.

Currently, the opposition holds increased representation in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly following the reallocation of reserved seats. Senior PML-N leaders have stated that there are no immediate plans to move a no-confidence motion against the provincial government. They have, however, maintained that the opposition has the constitutional right to take such action if it achieves a majority in the assembly. No official announcement regarding the next course of action has been made.
