Karachi has reported 546 deaths in traffic accidents in the first 219 days of 2025, with heavy vehicles such as trailers, water tankers, and dumpers cited as major contributors, according to data from the Chhippa Welfare Association. The same period saw 8,136 people injured, many of them seriously.

The breakdown of fatalities shows that 425 of the victims were men, 51 were women, 51 were boys, and 19 were girls. The data indicates that a significant number of incidents involved heavy vehicles operating within city limits, often in violation of traffic restrictions.

According to the statistics, heavy vehicles were involved in 165 fatal accidents during the reporting period. Among them, trailers were linked to 62 deaths, water tankers to 37, and dumpers to 32. Buses were associated with 20 fatalities, while Mazda trucks accounted for 14 deaths.

Traffic safety concerns have been repeatedly raised by local communities and advocacy groups, who point to overspeeding, abrupt lane changes, and failure to follow traffic signals as common factors in such incidents. These groups have also noted the frequent presence of heavy vehicles on major roads during peak commuting hours, despite regulations intended to limit their movement during those times.

Meetings between traffic police officials and transport sector representatives have been held in recent years to address the issue, but violations continue to be reported. While authorities have issued directives and conducted occasional enforcement drives, the data suggests that these measures have not significantly reduced the frequency of fatal incidents involving heavy vehicles.

Some citizen organisations have proposed that the Karachi traffic police establish specialised monitoring units dedicated to regulating the movement of heavy vehicles in the city. Recommendations include regular inspections, heavier fines for violations, and designated operational hours to reduce congestion and potential collisions.

Road safety experts recommend a comprehensive approach to reduce the city’s accident rate. Suggested measures include enhanced driver training programmes, stricter licensing requirements for commercial vehicle operators, infrastructure improvements to create dedicated lanes for heavy transport, and public awareness campaigns to encourage safer road practices.

Karachi has consistently recorded high numbers of road accidents in recent years, with collisions involving heavy vehicles being a recurring problem.
