The Sindh Wildlife Department has launched an investigation following reports of a crocodile attack on a woman near the Sukkur Barrage. The alleged incident took place in the Saleh Pat area along the Nara Canal, where social media users claimed a crocodile dragged a woman into the canal’s deep water. According to the reports, the woman’s husband intervened and managed to rescue her.

In response to these alarming claims, the Wildlife Department immediately instructed its Sukkur team to visit the location. Their task is to inspect the canal, meet the affected family, collect medical records and treatment details, and submit a detailed report with recommendations.

A team led by the Deputy Conservator of the Sukkur Wildlife Division, along with Area Wildlife Inspector Imam Bakhsh Samoon, visited the emergency ward of Sukkur Civil Hospital to verify the medical condition of the woman. However, they were informed that the family had left the hospital without notifying the staff.

The department has expressed ongoing concerns about illegal settlements and unauthorized hut constructions along the Nara Canal. This area is known as a natural habitat of Sindh’s native marsh crocodile, a species that generally prefers to avoid humans unless its territory is disturbed.

Worldwide, there are 18 species of crocodiles, with six found in Asia. Sindh’s marsh crocodile is smaller and less aggressive than other species such as the Nile or saltwater crocodiles. It mostly feeds on carrion and tends to turn aggressive only when it feels threatened or if its territory is invaded.

Experts note that this species prefers slow-moving waters and spends much of its time basking in the sun or hiding in burrows. The slow-flowing sections and outer banks of the Nara Canal provide an ideal habitat. The marsh crocodile can survive for months without food, relying on these quiet environments.

Social media has previously circulated similar claims of fatal crocodile attacks in the same region, but those were later found to be inaccurate. The Sindh Wildlife Department urges residents to exercise caution and respect wildlife habitats to prevent conflicts.

Officials continue their investigation to confirm the facts of the recent report and will provide updates accordingly.
