Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced that construction on the Wagah Heritage Corridor, Lahore’s first dedicated tourism highway, is progressing toward completion. The corridor extends 13 kilometers from the Quaid-e-Azam Interchange to the Wagah Border’s Zero Line. The project is designed to improve infrastructure and facilitate travel to the Wagah Border, a site of significant cultural and historical importance.

The Wagah Heritage Corridor project began in January 2025 with an allocated budget of 2.85 billion Pakistani Rupees (PKR). The corridor features a 68-foot-wide dual carriageway with additional 20-foot-wide service roads on both sides to manage traffic flow. A reinforced concrete drainage system stretching 22 kilometers has been constructed to address drainage needs along the route. Furthermore, a 10-kilometer decorative boundary wall and solar-powered streetlights have been installed to enhance the corridor’s functionality and appearance.

The corridor aims to provide better road infrastructure for daily commuters as well as visitors attending the flag-lowering ceremony held at the Wagah Border. This ceremony attracts millions of visitors annually. The route includes features such as portraits of national figures and landscaped areas along the highway.

The project also includes improvements to the sewage and drainage systems in areas adjacent to the Grand Trunk (GT) Road. These areas have faced civic issues related to inadequate sewage infrastructure. The newly constructed drainage system is intended to resolve such problems.

The Punjab government has set a target to complete the Wagah Heritage Corridor and open it for public use by September 2025. The project is part of a broader effort by the provincial administration to upgrade road infrastructure and support the development of tourism facilities.

By improving the route to the Wagah Border, the corridor is expected to provide enhanced connectivity between Lahore and the border area. This improvement will serve both local commuters and tourists, including domestic and international visitors.

The Wagah Heritage Corridor represents an investment in infrastructure aimed at supporting economic activities related to tourism in the region. The project includes modern features such as solar-powered lighting to promote sustainable development.
