In the heart of Lahore, Pakistan’s second-largest city, thousands of homeless people face harsh conditions and uncertainty every day, battling for food, shelter, and dignity amid rising urban poverty.

In the bustling streets of Lahore, Pakistan’s cultural and economic hub, a silent crisis continues to grow in the daily struggle of the homeless. As the city expands and modernizes, thousands of men, women, and children without a permanent home fight for survival in increasingly difficult conditions.

For many of Lahore’s homeless, life on the streets means constant uncertainty. With no fixed shelter, they often sleep on pavements, under bridges, or in parks, exposed to extreme weather, pollution, and the threat of violence. During the scorching summers, there’s little relief from the heat, while the winter months bring harsh colds that can be life-threatening without proper clothing or blankets.

A lack of access to basic needs   such as food, clean drinking water, hygiene facilities, and healthcare   makes day-to-day living extremely challenging. Many survive on occasional meals handed out by kind strangers or local charitable groups. Street children, in particular, are among the most vulnerable. Many are forced into begging or small street jobs to help support themselves or their families.

Mental health issues are also common among the homeless population, often worsened by substance abuse and the trauma of living in unstable and unsafe conditions. Yet, professional help remains far out of reach for most, as government-funded programs are either lacking or stretched thin.

While several non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and religious charities in Lahore are doing their best to support these individuals, their efforts are not enough to meet the overwhelming demand. Food distribution, temporary shelters, and mobile clinics are helpful but insufficient, especially when the number of people in need continues to grow.

One of the major contributing factors to homelessness in Lahore is rapid urbanization paired with rising inflation and unemployment. As rural families migrate to the city in search of better opportunities, many find themselves unable to afford rent, eventually ending up on the streets. Meanwhile, affordable housing programs remain limited in scope and slow to develop.

Experts say that while charity plays an important role in addressing short-term needs, long-term solutions must come from government policy. These include increasing investment in low-cost housing, improving access to mental health care and addiction services, and creating job opportunities for low-income families. Without a coordinated strategy, the cycle of poverty and homelessness will continue to grow.

Lahore’s homeless crisis is a complex and deeply human issue. Behind each person sleeping on a bench or under a tarp is a story of hardship, resilience, and survival. Addressing it requires not just compassion, but commitment from all levels of society.
