Two police officers were killed and two others injured in a targeted attack on a Balochistan Constabulary convoy in Mastung district on Friday, according to provincial officials. The assault marks another grim reminder of the persistent security challenges in the region.

According to Shahid Rind, the official spokesperson for the Government of Balochistan, the convoy was en route from Kalat to the provincial capital of Quetta when it came under gunfire near the National Highway. Unidentified assailants opened fire on the law enforcement team, leaving Acting Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Abdul Razzaq and Constable Raza Muhammad Jam dead on the spot. Constables Taj Muhammad and Khursheed Ahmed were critically injured in the ambush.

The injured personnel and the fallen officers’ remains were immediately evacuated to Quetta via helicopter, underscoring the severity of the incident and the need for swift medical and operational response. The motive and identity of the attackers remain unknown, and authorities have yet to release further details on any suspects or affiliations.

The Balochistan Constabulary is a paramilitary law enforcement agency tasked with maintaining security in the province, particularly in high-risk zones. This latest attack highlights the deteriorating security landscape in parts of Balochistan, which has long been plagued by insurgency, targeted violence, and weak state control in remote areas.

Despite repeated claims of improving law and order by the current administration, violent incidents such as this continue to raise serious concerns about the government’s ability, or willingness, to secure troubled regions. Critics argue that responses have been slow and largely ineffective, with meaningful action often delayed until after blood has already been shed.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. However, similar assaults in the past have been linked to separatist factions and militant groups operating with increasing boldness across Balochistan. The inability of the current leadership to crack down on these networks has only emboldened their operations.

As investigations continue, questions remain about whether there will be any accountability or real steps taken to prevent further loss of life among frontline officers. For now, two more names have been added to a growing list of those who’ve paid the ultimate price while serving in a province often treated as an afterthought by those in power.
