A Pakistani mountaineer has tragically died after an avalanche struck near Camp 1 on K2, Pakistan’s tallest mountain. The incident occurred Friday afternoon and impacted a group of four climbers. While two survived without serious harm and one foreign climber suffered minor injuries, local climber Iftikhar Hussain Sadpara lost his life.

The avalanche struck around 2:30 PM local time, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), a non-governmental organization that oversees and promotes mountaineering in the region. The climbers were part of a high-altitude expedition making their way up K2, which at 8,611 meters (28,251 feet), stands as the second-highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest.

Sadpara, who hailed from Skardu in Gilgit-Baltistan, was a respected member of Pakistan’s growing mountaineering community. His death marks another somber chapter in the history of the world’s most dangerous peaks. K2, often dubbed the “Savage Mountain,” is notorious for its extreme weather and high fatality rate among climbers.

Officials from ACP confirmed that Sadpara’s body was retrieved and returned to base camp shortly after the avalanche. The two surviving climbers managed to descend safely, though one international climber sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
