Karachi Residents Demonstrate Against Power Outages

Residents of Karachi took to the streets on July 23, 2025, to protest prolonged power outages that have severely disrupted daily life and water supply, expressing frustration over K-Electric’s ongoing mismanagement. The demonstrations, which included road blockades, reflect growing public anger over unreliable utilities in Pakistan’s economic hub.

In Punjab Colony, angry residents blocked the main road to Defence Mor, causing traffic congestion for over four hours, as reported by Geo News. The protest followed K-Electric’s decision to cut electricity to 80 flats on July 22, after a crackdown on illegal connections in nearby PNT Colony. Residents, many of whom insist they pay their bills regularly, accused K-Electric of unfairly penalizing law-abiding customers. “We are suffering for others’ faults,” said protester Ahmed Raza. The blockade, which extended into Boat Basin, ended only after authorities promised to restore power.

The outages, often lasting more than 12 hours daily, have also disrupted water supply systems, worsening conditions for families, particularly women and children, according to The Express Tribune. Earlier protests in areas such as Nafeesabad and Teen Hatti involved burning tires and road blockades, with residents confronting K-Electric staff over a lack of action. The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) recently approved a rate increase of Rs 0.40 per unit effective January 2025, despite K-Electric’s request for a minor tariff reduction being denied. Karachi’s aging infrastructure and rising energy demands have strained the system, leaving citizens to bear the consequences of these systemic failures.

These protests highlight a broader crisis of governance and accountability in Pakistan’s utility sector. K-Electric’s operational inefficiencies, combined with NEPRA’s tariff adjustments, disproportionately affect working-class communities. As Karachi residents call for reliable power, it is imperative that the government address these issues to restore public trust and ensure economic stability in the country’s largest city.
