Quetta Mother Held in Daughter’s Honour Killing Case

A Pakistani woman has been remanded into police custody following the suspected honour killing of her daughter and a man in Balochistan. The case has sparked outrage after a video confession surfaced online, in which the woman openly admitted to the killings and attempted to justify her actions by invoking tribal customs.

The incident reportedly occurred about six weeks ago in the Sanjidi Degari area near Quetta, the provincial capital of Balochistan. The woman, identified by authorities as Gul Jan Bibi, was arrested earlier this week after a video began circulating on social media. In the footage, she is seen holding a copy of the Holy Quran and declaring that the killings were not a crime but aligned with traditional Baloch tribal values.

According to police sources, Gul Jan Bibi allegedly targeted her daughter, Bano Bibi, and a man named Ehsanullah, accusing them of bringing dishonour to the family. Although the motive remains under investigation, officials believe the act was premeditated and linked to entrenched cultural and tribal beliefs around honour and social conduct.

Following her arrest, Gul Jan Bibi was presented before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Quetta, which ordered a two-day police remand to allow for further investigation and interrogation. Authorities confirmed that a case has been registered under terrorism charges, along with sections 302, 147, 148, and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code. Investigators are continuing to collect forensic evidence, record witness statements, and identify additional suspects.

Two men, including a tribal elder named Sardar Sherbaz Satakzai, are already in custody under a 10-day remand, and more arrests may follow.

The case has once again drawn national attention to the ongoing issue of honour killings in Pakistan. Despite legislative reforms and the efforts of human rights organisations, honour-based violence remains widespread, particularly in tribal and rural areas where perpetrators often invoke cultural justifications.

Law enforcement officials have pledged to pursue the case without bias. “The law will take its course, regardless of cultural or traditional justifications,” said a police official involved in the investigation.

Human rights advocates are calling for a swift and transparent trial, urging the state to send a clear message that honour-based violence will not be tolerated under any circumstance.

The case remains under investigation, and further legal action is expected once police complete their remand and submit findings to the court.
