Faisalabad has launched the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” program, empowering residents to submit their own electricity meter readings via the Power Smart App to ensure transparent billing. Initiated by the Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO), the program aims to curb overbilling and enhance consumer trust. This article explores the initiative’s rollout, its benefits, and its significance for Pakistan’s energy sector.

On July 24, 2025, FESCO unveiled the “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” program, aligning with Pakistan’s Digital Pakistan vision, as announced by ARY News. Consumers can now photograph their single-phase, three-phase, or net metering electricity meters and upload the images through the Power Smart App, available on Google Play Store and App Store, per Photo News. “This is a revolutionary initiative to empower consumers,” a FESCO spokesperson told Photo News, emphasizing that user-submitted readings will override those of traditional meter readers, reducing errors and disputes. The app, developed by the Ministry of Energy’s Power Division, ensures bills reflect actual usage, with clear photos marked as “Apna Meter, Apni Reading” on statements.

The program addresses long-standing complaints about inflated bills due to inaccurate readings by Distribution Companies (DISCOs) like FESCO. It particularly benefits protected-category consumers using under 200 units monthly, safeguarding their subsidized rates of Rs14.16 per unit, as delays often push them into higher slabs at Rs34.26, per Pakistan Observer. By allowing users to register with their Consumer ID and upload readings on designated dates, the app fosters accountability. FESCO also stressed safety, urging consumers to maintain distance from meters while photographing, per Photo News. Public sentiment on X reflects enthusiasm, with users like @ARYNEWSOFFICIAL praising the initiative’s transparency.

This Faisalabad-led effort, backed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Energy Minister Awais Leghari, signals a shift toward consumer empowerment and digital efficiency. By phasing out manual meter readers, as approved by Sharif, the program tackles overbilling and corruption, per Business Recorder. Faisalabad’s success could inspire nationwide adoption, strengthening trust in the power sector while advancing Pakistan’s technological progress.
