In Mohabbat Dero, Naushahro Feroz, a 13-year-old girl, Faiza, was raped and murdered, with her family alleging involvement of close relatives and a local jirga, sparking outrage and police action. This article examines the tragedy and the need for robust local justice.

On July 28, 2025, the brutal rape and murder of Faiza, a teenage girl from Mohabbat Dero in Naushahro Feroz, Sindh, sent shockwaves through the community. According to family statements reported by Daily Times, Faiza was assaulted by close relatives two weeks prior, with the matter handed to a local landlord, Azizullah Dahraj, for a jirga, a traditional tribal council, to resolve. Entrusted to Dahraj’s protection, Faiza was allegedly abducted from near his home, killed, and her body discarded. The Sindh Police shifted her body to Kandiaro hospital for a post-mortem, with a case to be registered post-report. Dahraj admitted to conducting the jirga, claiming the family’s insistence, per the Daily Times. Public anger, voiced on X by @Post4th, alleges possible poisoning and demands justice, highlighting distrust in local influencers.

This horrific incident exposes the dangers of extralegal jirgas, which often undermine Pakistan’s legal system, particularly in rural Sindh. The reliance on tribal councils reflects a broader failure of centralized governance, with federal policies criticized for neglecting local realities. The 2016 Anti-Rape Law, intended to strengthen protections, struggles against entrenched cultural practices, and weak enforcement. Activists like Ghulam Hussain Soomro, who led protests outside Naushahro Feroz Press Club, have demanded accountability, as noted in a 2008 Pakistan Press Foundation report on similar cases, underscoring a persistent pattern of violence against women in the region.

The Sindh Provincial Assembly (PA) must prioritize dismantling illegal jirgas and bolstering police resources to ensure swift justice. Community-driven reforms, including awareness campaigns and stricter enforcement of existing laws, are critical to protect vulnerable girls like Faiza. As investigations continue, this tragedy demands local leadership to challenge outdated traditions and restore faith in the rule of law, preventing further loss of innocent lives.
