Cambodia to Nominate Trump for Nobel Peace Prize for Mediating Border Conflict

Cambodia has declared its intention to nominate former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, recognizing his role in easing a recent border conflict with Thailand. The decision follows a ceasefire agreement that put an end to weeks of rising tensions and military clashes between the two Southeast Asian neighbors.

Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol stated that Trump played a key part in encouraging dialogue that led to the truce. Although specific details of his involvement remain limited, Chanthol noted that Trump’s mediation helped pave the way for both sides to step back from confrontation. “His mediation helped restore peace and protect the livelihoods of thousands,” Chanthol said during a press conference on Monday.

The conflict, the most intense in the region in over a decade, resulted in several casualties and displaced numerous families in contested areas. In the wake of the ceasefire, both countries have withdrawn their forces, and regional observers are now monitoring the situation to ensure ongoing compliance and stability.

Beyond halting hostilities, the ceasefire also helped safeguard Cambodia’s vital garment industry from the threat of U.S. trade sanctions. Employing hundreds of thousands, the sector faced uncertainty due to the conflict’s economic ripple effects. Officials have credited Trump’s intervention with helping stabilize this key area of Cambodia’s economy.

Though the nomination is still in its early stages, Cambodia joins a small number of countries, including Pakistan and Israel, in publicly acknowledging Trump’s efforts toward peace. However, authorities emphasized that the Nobel Committee operates independently and follows a confidential, rigorous selection process.

The proposed nomination highlights Cambodia’s broader support for diplomatic solutions to international disputes, independent of political lines. The focus of the announcement remained solely on Trump’s role in this particular conflict, without reference to his broader political agenda.

As of now, no official statements have been issued by the Thai government or the United Nations regarding the ceasefire or Cambodia’s proposed nomination. Under Nobel Foundation guidelines, all formal nominations remain confidential until officially announced.

Cambodia’s move underscores its commitment to peaceful conflict resolution and recognizes diplomatic contributions that support long-term regional peace and stability.
