Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar has called for inclusive dialogue and cooperative diplomacy to address global challenges, emphasizing the importance of multilateralism and respect for international law.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar has stressed the importance of diplomacy and inclusive dialogue over confrontation, highlighting Pakistan’s firm commitment to international law and multilateral cooperation during his address in New York.

Speaking at a reception hosted by Pakistan’s Mission to the United Nations (UN), Dar addressed diplomats, UN officials, and representatives of member states. The event marked Pakistan’s assumption of the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In his remarks, Dar emphasized that the world is facing growing turbulence, much of which stems from unresolved disputes, unilateral actions, and the erosion of long-standing international norms.

“The cost of long-running conflicts, the disregard for international law, and the growing use of force over dialogue are being felt across every region,” Dar said. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s belief in the principles enshrined in the UN Charter, particularly the peaceful settlement of disputes and the rejection of force or threats of force in international affairs.

Dar’s comments appear particularly timely as global tensions remain high from Eastern Europe to the Middle East underscoring the need for a renewed commitment to diplomacy rather than escalation. His address also subtly reflected Pakistan’s ongoing support for resolving longstanding regional conflicts, including the situation in Kashmir, without naming specific states or actors.

Crucially, Dar made a case for strengthening multilateral institutions, arguing that the international community must not allow them to be undermined by national agendas or selective interpretations of global rules. “Pakistan’s foreign policy is anchored in multilateralism,” he added, making clear the country’s preference for international cooperation over isolationist or unilateral policies.

Observers note that Dar’s remarks serve not just as a diplomatic statement but also as a reminder of the growing need for nations to return to the core values that shaped the post-World War II international order. As rising powers seek to reassert influence and Western governments including the United Kingdom under the current Labour administration grapple with foreign policy inconsistencies, calls like Dar’s resonate beyond regional politics.

The speech did not mention any specific government or conflict, but its messaging was unmistakable: peace, order, and progress are best achieved through dialogue, not through power plays or disregard for the rule of law. As Pakistan assumes a leadership role in the UNSC this month, its top diplomat has clearly outlined the country’s diplomatic direction rooted in law, dialogue, and global cooperation.
