Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur hosted the first of several tribal jirgas on August 2, 2025, to promote peace and development in the province’s tribal districts.

On August 2, 2025, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur convened the first in a series of regional jirgas at the Chief Minister’s House in Peshawar, aiming to restore peace and foster development in the tribal districts. The initiative, following an All Parties Conference (APC), brought together 150 tribal elders, six Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPAs), three Members of the National Assembly (MNAs), and one senator from Khyber, Orakzai, and the tribal subdivisions of Dara Adam Khel and Hassan Khel.

The jirga condemned terrorism unequivocally and rejected military operations that cause civilian displacement, asserting that such measures undermine peace efforts. Gandapur emphasized that peace is essential for development, stating that stability would accelerate progress in the region, as reported by The Express Tribune. The elders recommended sending a delegation of provincial officials and tribal leaders to negotiate with Afghanistan to address cross-border militancy, urging the federal government to provide resources for these talks. They also clarified that no external entities have been granted control over K-P’s mineral resources, reaffirming local sovereignty over provincial assets.

The initiative responds to escalating security challenges in K-P, particularly following the recent Operation Sarbakaf in Bajaur, which sparked protests over civilian casualties. Gandapur, aligned with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan’s directive, opposed federal military operations without provincial consent, stressing that border security is a federal responsibility while K-P police are equipped to handle internal threats, per Dawn. Further jirgas are planned for Mohmand, Bajaur, North and South Waziristan, and Kurram, culminating in a grand jirga chaired by Gandapur to finalize a comprehensive anti-terrorism strategy.

This move highlights K-P’s push for local solutions to security issues, prioritizing dialogue over military action. By engaging tribal elders and elected representatives, Gandapur aims to rebuild trust and ensure that policies reflect the region’s needs, fostering stability without compromising civilian welfare.
