Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Islamabad on August 2, 2025, for a two-day state visit after paying respects at Allama Iqbal’s mausoleum in Lahore, aiming to strengthen Pakistan-Iran ties.

On August 2, 2025, Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian landed in Islamabad for a two-day official visit, following a stop in Lahore where he honored Pakistan’s national poet, Allama Muhammad Iqbal, by laying a floral wreath at his mausoleum and offering prayers, as reported by Radio Pakistan. Welcomed in Lahore by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif, Pezeshkian’s visit underscores the deep cultural and historical bonds between Pakistan and Iran. The president, accompanied by a high-level delegation including Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi, is set to engage in key discussions to advance bilateral cooperation.

In Islamabad, Pezeshkian’s itinerary includes meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gillani, and National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, according to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA). The talks aim to bolster trade, border security, and energy cooperation, with several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) expected to be signed, as per The Nation. Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar noted that the visit will enhance economic and cultural ties, with Islamabad adorned with flags and portraits to mark the occasion.

The visit follows Prime Minister Sharif’s trip to Tehran on May 26, 2025, and comes amid broader regional developments. Both nations expressed support for a two-state solution for Palestine and urged restraint in the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, aligning with United Nations (UN) resolutions, per a MoFA statement. Pakistan’s military leadership is also expected to meet Pezeshkian to discuss security collaboration, particularly for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

This visit, Pezeshkian’s first to Pakistan since assuming office in July 2024, reinforces the strategic partnership between the two nations. As Pakistan navigates regional challenges, the strengthened ties with Iran signal a pragmatic approach to fostering stability and economic growth.
