Karachi Father Jumps into Sea with Children, Body Recovered

The body of Aurangzeb Alam, a school teacher who jumped into the sea near Karachi’s Do Darya area along with his two children, was recovered on Saturday near China Port. The tragic event unfolded on Thursday, reportedly following a family court hearing related to a child custody dispute.

Alam, a resident of Orangi Town, had been embroiled in a legal battle with his wife over the custody of their three children. According to police sources and family members, tensions had escalated in recent months, and Alam appeared increasingly distressed in the days leading up to the incident.

After attending the court session, Alam took his two children with him. Later that day, he drove to the coastal area of Do Darya and, in a moment of apparent emotional breakdown, jumped into the sea with them.

The body of Aurangzeb was recovered two days later by rescue teams near China Port. His brother, Sagheer Alam, identified the deceased and confirmed his identity to police officials. Sagheer stated that Aurangzeb was the father of three children. He added that the couple’s six-year-old child had been living with the mother following earlier custody decisions.

Rescue operations are still underway to locate the missing children, and authorities have not yet confirmed their fate. Maritime Security Agency personnel and divers from the Edhi Foundation continue to scour the area. Officials say strong tidal currents and poor visibility have complicated recovery efforts.

Law enforcement agencies have launched an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Police officials stated that preliminary findings suggest the act was driven by psychological distress rather than premeditated harm to the children. However, further investigation is ongoing, and statements from the mother and other close relatives are being recorded.

The tragedy has sparked a broader conversation in the community about the emotional toll of prolonged domestic disputes and the importance of mental health support during legal proceedings. Several social workers and child rights activists have called for greater psychological counseling services in family courts to help parents cope with the emotional strain of custody battles.

Authorities urge the public to seek professional help in times of emotional crisis and stress that support is available through various NGOs and mental health helplines in the city.

As of now, funeral arrangements for Alam are pending. The family has requested privacy while search operations for the children continue.
