Karachi Launches Vertical Parking Facility to Ease Boulton Market Congestion

Karachi has taken a significant step toward easing urban congestion with the launch of a vertical parking facility at Boulton Market. The project, spearheaded by the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), was inaugurated by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Sunday. With capacity for over 200 cars and 250 motorcycles, the multi-level facility is expected to help alleviate parking woes in one of the city’s most densely populated commercial areas.

The facility has been designed to address a longstanding issue in Boulton Market, where a lack of organized parking has led to traffic chaos and hampered business activity. Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad, representatives of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), and other dignitaries joined the mayor at the launch. Speaking at the event, Mayor Wahab highlighted that this project is part of a broader push to modernize Karachi’s aging infrastructure and revive its commercial core. “Urban development must serve commerce and convenience,” he said, noting that improved infrastructure can directly boost economic activity.

Business leaders welcomed the development, with members of the KCCI stressing that better parking solutions would not only streamline logistics but also create a more inviting environment for customers and traders. The vertical parking model reflects a smart urban planning approach that prioritizes efficient use of limited space in high-traffic zones. By building vertically rather than expanding horizontally, the project avoids further encroachment on public roads and sidewalks, a major concern in city planning debates. The KMC deserves credit for adopting a solution that addresses real urban challenges without bloated spending or unnecessary bureaucracy.

While critics often focus on the inefficiencies of local governance, projects like this demonstrate what can be achieved when administration and civil society work in tandem. Karachi has long suffered from neglect in public services and transport planning, but this initiative offers a glimpse of practical, replicable solutions. If maintained and replicated in other commercial hotspots, vertical parking facilities could reshape how Karachi manages its urban sprawl. With traffic congestion being one of the city’s most pressing problems, the Boulton Market parking facility signals that targeted, well-executed infrastructure investments can drive meaningful change. This may just be the blueprint for a more functional and business-friendly Karachi.
