A man was arrested by Malir City police in connection with a robbery that took place at the residence of a Chinese national in Karachi’s Clifton area. The suspect, identified as Fayaz, was taken into custody following an intelligence-based operation. His wife, Sonia, who allegedly assisted in the crime, remains at large.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Malir, Dr Abdul Khaliq Pirzada, the robbery occurred in October 2024 in Clifton Block 4, within the jurisdiction of the Boat Basin police station. The victim, identified in local media as Zou Bao Sheng or Xu Baosheng, is a Chinese national residing in the area. Sonia had been employed in his home as a domestic helper.

Police investigations revealed that Sonia used her job to observe the household’s routine and gather information about valuables. Working with Fayaz, she allegedly helped plan and carry out the robbery. The suspects reportedly stole cash and gold jewelry valued at approximately Rs1 million, though some reports suggest the amount may have been closer to Rs3 million.

An FIR was registered at the Clifton police station under Sections 381 and 34 of the Pakistan Penal Code following a complaint filed by the Chinese national. The case remained open while police followed leads, eventually leading to Fayaz’s arrest in Malir. During interrogation, he reportedly admitted to the crime and told investigators that he and Sonia had committed similar offenses in other cities.

Fayaz also revealed that the couple changed their appearance after each incident to avoid detection. Police say the same method of infiltration and escape was used in multiple cases across the country. As of now, Sonia has not been located, and law enforcement agencies are continuing efforts to track her down through targeted raids.

Authorities have not issued an official statement urging public action, but the incident has sparked discussions around the importance of background checks when hiring domestic staff. While there are no reports of involvement from diplomatic authorities, the Chinese consulate in Karachi has been informed of the matter.

The case highlights security concerns in private residences and emphasizes the need for greater caution in hiring practices, particularly in homes of foreign nationals.
