A drug suspect was shot and killed in Karachi on Wednesday in what police described as an attempted escape while in custody. Two constables from Paposh Nagar police station have been booked in connection with the incident, and an internal investigation is underway.

The deceased was identified as 30-year-old Abbas, a resident of Chandni Chowk. He was taken into custody on Tuesday night after officers allegedly found a quantity of crystal meth in his possession. Following his arrest, Abbas was transferred to the station’s investigation wing for further questioning.

According to the First Information Report, Abbas was being escorted from the lock-up to the investigation officer’s room on Wednesday when he suddenly broke free and tried to flee. Constables Izharul Haq and Khadim Hussain pursued him and reportedly caught up with him near the railway bridge close to the police station.

Police claim that a struggle ensued during which Abbas allegedly attempted to snatch Constable Izharul Haq’s service weapon. During the altercation, the weapon discharged, and Abbas was shot in the neck. He was rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

Following the incident, senior officials from the Karachi police ordered a formal inquiry. Both constables involved in the shooting were booked under relevant sections of the law, although their exact charges have not been publicly disclosed. Police authorities have stated that the investigation will determine whether proper procedures were followed.

The shooting has sparked renewed scrutiny over detainee handling practices and the use of firearms by police officers. Human rights groups and legal observers have in the past raised concerns about custodial deaths and the potential for misuse of force in such settings.

No official statement has been released by the family of the deceased as of Thursday afternoon. The police have not confirmed whether Abbas had any prior criminal record. No additional arrests have been made in connection with the case.

The Karachi police department has reiterated that the incident is being treated with seriousness and transparency. Results from the inquiry are expected to determine whether disciplinary or legal action will be taken against the officers involved.
