Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly establishes a parliamentary committee to address the province’s worsening security situation, urging unified action to restore peace.

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly has taken a decisive step to confront the province’s escalating law and order challenges by forming a parliamentary committee tasked with devising strategies to restore stability. The decision, announced on August 2, 2025, responds to rising incidents of violence and aims to foster collaboration across political lines, as reported by The News International.

The committee, comprising members from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), and other parties, will assess the root causes of insecurity, including militancy and cross-border tensions. KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur emphasized the need for collective responsibility, noting that the province faces persistent threats from groups like the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). According to Dawn, he directed the committee to coordinate with law enforcement agencies, including the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), to propose actionable measures within 60 days. The assembly’s resolution, passed unanimously, highlighted recent attacks in Bannu and Swat as evidence of deteriorating security.

Security analyst Khadim Hussain, quoted by The Express Tribune, underscored that KP’s proximity to Afghanistan exacerbates its vulnerability to militancy, with 2024 seeing a 30% rise in terrorist incidents compared to 2023, per the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies. The committee will review existing policies, such as the National Action Plan (NAP), and recommend enhancements to strengthen policing and intelligence operations. Speaker Babar Saleem Swati, addressing the assembly, stressed that delays in addressing security gaps have cost lives, urging swift implementation, as reported by Geo News.

The initiative follows public outcry over recent bombings and targeted killings, which have strained local businesses and displaced communities in KP’s tribal districts. The committee is expected to engage with federal authorities to secure additional resources for the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Police, which reported 1,200 personnel shortages in 2024, per ARY News. The assembly’s move signals a commitment to restoring order amid growing regional instability.
