Lahore’s Wagah Heritage Corridor Project Advances Rapidly

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has announced significant progress on Lahore’s first dedicated tourism highway, the Wagah Heritage Corridor. The 13-kilometer route connects the Quaid-e-Azam Interchange to the Wagah Border, also known as the Zero Line, and is designed to enhance the travel experience for millions of visitors each year.

The project has already received Rs. 285 million in development funds. It involves expanding the dual carriageway to 68 feet with additional 20-foot service roads on both sides. Infrastructure improvements include over 22 kilometers of reinforced concrete drainage, a 10-kilometer decorative boundary wall, and modern solar-powered streetlights along the corridor.

Since its launch in January, the project has moved swiftly towards completion. Chief Minister Nawaz Sharif emphasized that once finished, the Wagah Heritage Corridor will ensure smooth traffic flow and world-class travel facilities for both domestic and international visitors attending the daily Wagah Border parade.

Highlighting the corridor’s potential to boost tourism, the Chief Minister noted its special significance for Sikh pilgrims traveling from India. The route will feature vibrant cultural displays, murals of national heroes, and illuminated streetscapes to welcome visitors and showcase Pakistan’s rich heritage and beauty.

In addition to tourism, the project aims to address long-standing civic issues. The upgraded road and improved sewage system are expected to benefit residents by resolving infrastructure challenges that have persisted in the area.

The total expenditure on the project has reached Rs. 2.85 billion, reflecting the government’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure and promoting tourism in Lahore.

The Wagah Heritage Corridor project represents a major step forward in enhancing connectivity and cultural tourism at a key border crossing between Pakistan and India.
