Ali Waris Bangash, son of Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) leader Maulana Rajab Ali Bangash, was fatally shot late Monday night in what police are investigating as a suspected sectarian attack in Karachi’s Pehalwan Goth area. His friend, Syed Mazhar Abbas, son of Muhammad Ali, also died shortly after being transported to a private hospital.

According to Karachi police, the incident occurred outside a battery shop in Gulistan-e-Jauhar when two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on the group. Initial reports suggest that a vehicle may also have been involved in the coordinated assault. Emergency responders transported the injured to a nearby private hospital, where Bangash and Abbas were pronounced dead. Three other individuals remain hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the type of weapons used or details from any ballistic evidence. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the motive was sectarian in nature. Police stated that witness testimonies have been collected and CCTV footage from the surrounding area is currently being reviewed.

In a statement released following the attack, MWM representative Allama Sadiq Jafari condemned the shooting, describing it as an act of sectarian violence. He called on law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure those responsible are held accountable.

The funeral for Ali Waris Bangash drew a significant number of mourners, including religious leaders, political figures, and community members. The funeral prayers were held at a cemetery along the Superhighway under heightened security.

Local officials reaffirmed their commitment to a full investigation. As of Tuesday evening, no arrests have been reported.

Karachi has witnessed sporadic incidents of sectarian violence in the past, prompting repeated calls for stronger interfaith protections and improved law enforcement coordination. Civil society organizations and local leaders have urged authorities to prevent further escalation and restore public confidence in community safety measures.
