Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB) recovered Rs456.3 billion ($1.6 billion) in looted national wealth in Q2 2025, compensating government entities and over 12,000 individuals.

Pakistan’s National Accountability Bureau (NAB), the country’s primary anti-corruption agency, announced on Saturday that it had recovered Rs456.3 billion ($1.6 billion) in misappropriated national wealth during the second quarter of 2025. According to a report by Pakistan Today, this recovery marks a significant increase of Rs91.01 billion compared to the Rs365.29 billion retrieved in the first quarter of 2025. The funds, comprising movable and immovable properties, were returned to various federal and provincial government departments, financial institutions, and 12,611 individuals affected by large-scale fraud cases. This achievement underscores NAB’s ongoing efforts to safeguard public assets and restore financial integrity.

The quarterly report highlighted that NAB’s recoveries in the first two quarters of 2025 totaled Rs547.31 billion, with Rs532.33 billion in properties disbursed to government entities and financial institutions. NAB emphasized that its work over the past two years has yielded Rs5,854.73 billion, a 700 percent increase compared to the Rs839.08 billion recovered since its establishment in 1999. The agency is also collaborating with provincial revenue departments to reclaim state land worth an estimated Rs5 trillion, which remains under illegal possession. These efforts reflect NAB’s commitment to combating corruption and recovering assets acquired through illicit means, as stated in its official report.

NAB’s intensified anti-corruption measures come as Pakistan ranks 135 out of 180 countries on Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index for 2024, a decline of two positions from the previous year. The agency’s core mission involves investigating allegations of corruption, misuse of authority, and financial crimes, ensuring accountability for those who exploit public resources. The recent recovery has been hailed as a step toward restoring public trust in governance, with NAB pledging to continue its rigorous pursuit of justice. While no specific comments from NAB officials were included in the report, the agency’s statement emphasized its dedication to protecting the national exchequer and compensating victims of financial misconduct.

This milestone highlights the critical role of institutions like NAB in addressing systemic corruption, with tangible results benefiting both the state and its citizens. The agency’s ongoing efforts to recover unlawfully held assets signal a robust approach to tackling financial crimes in Pakistan.
