NEPRA Set to Lower Power Tariffs Nationwide

Consumers across Pakistan may receive a slight financial reprieve in the coming months, as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is expected to approve a reduction in electricity tariffs. The anticipated decrease is part of routine quarterly and fuel price adjustments.

According to official sources, NEPRA held a public hearing on August 4 to review the fourth quarterly tariff adjustment (QTA) for the fiscal year 2024-25. Power distribution companies (DISCOs) submitted their adjustment requests, citing changes in fuel costs and other operational considerations.

Following the hearing, NEPRA is likely to approve a negative adjustment of Rs 1.89 per unit. This decision, once finalized, will impact electricity bills for August, September, and October. After the inclusion of taxes and other charges, consumers may see a net reduction of approximately Rs0.77 per unit in their upcoming bills.

The adjustment is part of a broader mechanism used by NEPRA to stabilize energy prices and reflect actual generation costs. These periodic revisions are based on real-time data from the power sector, ensuring that pricing aligns with consumption trends and global fuel market fluctuations.

For millions of households and businesses already facing economic strain, even a modest reduction in utility bills could provide some relief. The move is seen as part of an ongoing effort to balance affordability with energy sector sustainability.

NEPRA’s final decision will be made public in the coming days, with revised rates expected to appear in consumer bills beginning this August.
