Pakistan Escalates Kashmir Issue at UNSC

Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, has submitted a formal letter to the President of the UN Security Council, Eloy Alfaro, raising concerns over alleged human rights violations in Indian-administered Kashmir. The letter, authored by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, was delivered during Ecuador’s presidency of the Security Council for August.

The communication is part of Pakistan’s ongoing diplomatic campaign to keep international attention focused on the Kashmir issue. According to diplomatic sources, while the contents of the letter have not been made public, it reportedly highlights incidents of extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and restrictions on religious practices in the region. New Delhi has previously rejected such claims, maintaining that matters in Jammu and Kashmir are its internal affairs.

The timing of the démarche coincides with increased tensions along the Line of Control (LoC), where reports of cross-border incidents have surfaced in recent weeks. This marks Pakistan’s third letter to the Security Council concerning Kashmir in 2025, reinforcing Islamabad’s objective to sustain global dialogue on the matter.

Analysts note that the move comes just ahead of India taking over the G20 presidency, an event viewed by New Delhi as an opportunity to elevate its international standing. In contrast, Pakistan’s latest communication is seen as an effort to draw attention to unresolved territorial disputes and highlight the region’s human rights concerns.

While it remains unclear how the Security Council will respond, especially given the divided stance of its permanent members, the letter ensures that Kashmir remains part of the Council’s broader discussions. The closed-door nature of these sessions limits immediate outcomes, but Pakistan’s strategy appears focused on maintaining international engagement rather than expecting urgent resolutions.

Pakistan continues to assert that Kashmir’s status is disputed under international law and requires global oversight. This latest diplomatic outreach underscores Islamabad’s commitment to keeping the issue alive at major global forums.
