Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomes the historic Azerbaijan-Armenia peace agreement brokered by the U.S., signaling new regional stability.

On August 9, 2025, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed Pakistan’s strong support for the landmark peace agreement between the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia, signed at the White House Summit under the facilitation of United States (U.S.) President Donald J. Trump. The accord, a significant step toward ending decades of conflict in the South Caucasus, was hailed as a triumph of diplomacy.

The agreement, signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, aims to normalize relations and foster economic cooperation, as reported by Pakistan Today. Sharif congratulated Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people, noting that the deal reflects “wisdom, foresight, and sagacity” in pursuing regional peace. He emphasized Pakistan’s longstanding solidarity with Azerbaijan, describing it as a “brotherly nation” and affirming support during this historic moment, according to The Express Tribune.

Sharif also commended the U.S. for its pivotal role in mediating the agreement, which is expected to open new avenues for trade, connectivity, and regional integration. The deal includes commitments to cease hostilities, establish diplomatic ties, and respect territorial integrity, as detailed by Dawn. The Foreign Office (FO) of Pakistan echoed Sharif’s sentiments, stating that the agreement showcases Azerbaijan’s leadership in resolving a prolonged conflict peacefully, per The Nation.

The White House Summit, held on August 8, 2025, marked a diplomatic victory for the Trump administration, with additional bilateral agreements signed to enhance energy, trade, and technology cooperation, according to ARY News. Sharif expressed hope that this model of dialogue could inspire resolutions for other global conflicts, fostering stability beyond the Caucasus.

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also praised the agreement, calling it a “historic moment” and commending Aliyev’s resolve, as reported by Business Recorder. He extended congratulations to his Azerbaijani counterpart, Jeyhun Bayramov, and expressed optimism for lasting peace in the region. This peace deal, ending over 35 years of hostility, positions Pakistan to strengthen ties with Azerbaijan while supporting regional economic growth and stability.
