Pakistan Reaffirms Commitment to Jammu and Kashmir Cause

On July 12, 2025, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his nation’s unwavering support for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing Pakistan’s resolve to back their struggle for self-determination. This statement, made during a message commemorating Kashmir Martyrs’ Day, underscores Islamabad’s long-standing stance on the disputed region. The article explores Pakistan’s commitment, the historical context of the issue, and the implications for regional stability.

The Prime Minister’s remarks came on Kashmir Martyrs’ Day, observed annually on July 13 to honor 22 Kashmiris killed in 1931 while protesting against the Dogra rulers in Jammu and Kashmir. Sharif declared, “The government of Pakistan will continue to extend its political, diplomatic, and moral support to the people of Jammu and Kashmir who are waging a struggle to gain their right to self-determination and freedom”. This aligns with Pakistan’s consistent advocacy for a resolution in line with United Nations (United Nations) Security Council resolutions, which call for a plebiscite to determine the region’s future. Sharif emphasized the sacrifices of the Kashmiri people, stating, “The Kashmiri people have been and are sacrificing their lives in their legitimate struggle”, framing their cause as a fight against India’s occupation.

The Jammu and Kashmir dispute, a flashpoint since the 1947 partition of British India, remains a core issue fueling tensions between India and Pakistan. Pakistan’s position is rooted in its view of the region as illegally occupied by India, a stance reiterated by Sharif’s call for a “just and peaceful resolution”. This rhetoric comes amid heightened regional friction, with India accusing Pakistan of supporting terrorism, a charge Islamabad denies. Recent events, including India’s 2019 revocation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, have further strained ties, with Pakistan warning of potential conflict escalation.

Pakistan’s support extends beyond words, with diplomatic efforts to internationalize the issue, as seen in recent delegations led by figures like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. However, critics argue this stance fuels instability, with India’s military bolstering its presence to counter alleged Pakistani-backed infiltrations. Sharif’s remarks signal no retreat from Pakistan’s position, raising questions about the prospects for peace in a region marked by decades of strife.
