Pakistan to Begin Land Work on M-6 Motorway

The National Highway Authority (NHA) has confirmed that land acquisition for the M-6 Sukkur-Hyderabad motorway will begin within the next month, marking a significant step forward in one of Pakistan’s key transport infrastructure projects.

The M-6 is part of the north-south motorway corridor and is expected to begin construction by April 2026. The project will be funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), and the NHA is currently seeking advance procurement approval. A formal request will also be sent to the Sindh government to initiate the land acquisition process.

The update was delivered during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Communications, chaired by Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani. The committee reviewed progress on major road projects designed to enhance transport connectivity and improve highway safety.

Lawmakers expressed concern over the repeated absence of the Secretary of Communications. The committee warned that the matter would be referred to the House and the Privilege Committee if it continued.

The meeting also addressed the recent increase in motorway toll charges, which have been raised three times in a short span. Some members of the committee questioned whether this violates the policy limiting toll adjustments to once every three years. The NHA has been asked to provide a full explanation at the next committee session.

Separately, the Inspector General of the Motorway Police briefed the committee on the enforcement of speed limits across the national motorway network. He outlined the legal procedures used to penalize drivers exceeding the 150 km/h speed threshold.

Once completed, the M-6 motorway is expected to improve travel efficiency, reduce transport time, and support regional economic growth by linking southern Sindh with the broader national road network.
