Punjab to Build 3,000 New Flats for Workers

The Punjab government has approved the allotment of 1,220 residential flats for industrial workers across the province and announced plans to construct 3,000 more units shortly, as part of a broader effort to expand affordable housing under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s leadership.

The announcement was made during the 28th meeting of the provincial cabinet, chaired by CM Maryam Nawaz. The approved flats will be distributed through a balloting system at three key sites: Labour Complex Sundar, Labour Colony Taxila, and a designated location in Kasur.

Crucially, the chief minister rejected a proposal to charge workers for these flats, instead directing relevant authorities to implement the project immediately and without cost to recipients. The move aligns with the government’s strategy to support industrial workers and improve their living conditions through state-backed housing.

In addition to housing, the cabinet also approved steps to improve urban infrastructure and public utilities. These include the expansion of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to five additional divisions and 13 cities across Punjab. The expansion aims to improve water supply and waste management systems in both urban and semi-urban areas as new housing schemes roll out.

CM Maryam Nawaz also directed the launch of an AI-based traffic management system within 90 days to reduce congestion and improve safety across Punjab’s growing urban centers. A new Excel Load Management System for road infrastructure will be implemented to monitor and optimize cargo flow, supporting both housing development logistics and broader infrastructure management.

These initiatives signal a push by the Punjab government to integrate housing, transport, and urban services into a coordinated development framework, ensuring that new residential projects are supported by modern, efficient infrastructure.
