Sindh Minister: KE Receiving Low-Cost Solar Power

KARACHI — Sindh Minister for Energy, Planning, and Development Syed Nasir Hussain Shah stated that K-Electric (KE) is currently receiving low-cost electricity from various solar and hybrid power plants in the province, including the Nooriabad Power Plant. He noted that further renewable energy supply is planned for the future.

Speaking at a special session of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FPCCI) Standing Committee on Energy, Shah expressed concern that despite these cost-effective supplies, KE continues to highlight rising fossil fuel prices as a challenge.

“The company is receiving cheaper power and can no longer deny it,” Shah said, adding that the provincial government is working on a structured mechanism to address consumer complaints regarding overbilling by the utility provider.

The minister also voiced the Sindh government’s opposition to taxing solar energy, describing it as a clean, affordable, and sustainable power source that should be widely promoted rather than discouraged.

Further, Shah emphasized the need for fair representation of Sindh in the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). He called on the federal government to allocate three seats for the province: one each for the provincial government, the business community, and consumer rights groups.

“This would ensure that the voices and concerns of all stakeholders from Sindh are heard in regulatory matters,” he added.

The remarks reflect growing concerns within Sindh’s administration and business community about transparency in electricity pricing and billing practices. Industry leaders at the FPCCI session also underscored the importance of promoting local renewable energy solutions to reduce reliance on imported fossil fuels and curb inflationary pressures in the energy sector.

The Sindh government has been actively supporting solar and hybrid energy projects to increase power affordability and reduce environmental impact, aligning with broader goals of sustainable development within the province.

As debates continue between provincial stakeholders and utility providers, consumer advocacy and regulatory reforms remain central to energy policy discussions in Pakistan’s largest city.
