Sindh Police Crack Down on Corrupt Officers

Ten Station House Officers (SHOs) in Sindh, Pakistan, face suspension and demotion for alleged criminal activities, signaling a tough stance on police misconduct.

In a decisive move to restore public trust, the Inspector General (IG) of Sindh Police, Ghulam Nabi Memon, has ordered the suspension and demotion of ten Station House Officers (SHOs) across multiple districts, including Hyderabad, Karachi, Sanghar, Qambar Shahdadkot, Sukkur, and Shikarpur. These officers are accused of engaging in social crimes and serious misconduct, tarnishing the reputation of the police force. The action reflects a broader commitment to rooting out corruption within law enforcement, a persistent issue that has eroded confidence in the system.

The disciplined officers have been reassigned to “B-Company” at Police Headquarters in Garden, Karachi, a disciplinary unit often referred to as “Kala Pani” or internal banishment, where they are required to report daily for eight hours without active duties. According to an official order signed by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Establishment Naeem Ahmed Shaikh, one officer, Zahid Siraj, previously the SHO of A-Section Latifabad police station in Hyderabad, has been demoted to Sub-Inspector (SI). Of the remaining nine, six are from Karachi, with one each from Qambar Shahdadkot, Sukkur, and Shikarpur. The demotions include six Inspectors reduced to Sub-Inspectors, three Sub-Inspectors downgraded to Assistant Sub-Inspectors (ASI), and one Assistant Sub-Inspector demoted to Head Constable.

This crackdown follows a pattern of accountability measures within the Sindh Police. Earlier instances, such as the suspension of three Karachi officers in February 2025 for mishandling a kidnapping case, indicate a sustained effort to address unprofessional conduct. Inspector General Memon has emphasized that negligence and unethical behavior will not be tolerated, aligning with his vision of a disciplined force focused on crime prevention and public service, as stated on the Sindh Police website.

The public has long demanded stricter oversight of law enforcement, and this action sends a clear message: no one is above the law. However, challenges remain, as systemic issues like inadequate training and resource constraints continue to plague the force. For now, these suspensions signal a step toward cleaning up the ranks and rebuilding trust in a region where law and order are paramount.
