The United States has formally informed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) that President Donald Trump is calling for a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine to be reached no later than August 8. The announcement, made by a senior American diplomat, signals a renewed push from Washington to end the ongoing conflict that began in 2022.

Speaking during a Thursday session with the 15-member council, U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the U.N. John Kelley stated, “Both Russia and Ukraine must negotiate a ceasefire and durable peace. It is time to make a deal. President Trump has made clear that this must be done by August 8. The United States is prepared to implement additional measures to secure peace.” While Kelley did not specify what those additional measures might involve, his remarks indicated a readiness from the administration to step up efforts if negotiations stall.

The war, which started with Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, has caused extensive loss of life, significant infrastructure damage, and economic disruption across Europe and beyond. Despite multiple rounds of talks, no lasting peace agreement has been reached. The Trump administration’s latest move reflects a more assertive, deadline-driven strategy to encourage renewed negotiations.

Throughout the conflict, the U.S. has remained one of Ukraine’s leading supporters, providing military assistance, strategic intelligence, and humanitarian aid. Still, the administration has made clear that a prolonged military engagement is not a sustainable path forward and continues to urge both sides to pursue diplomatic solutions.

The proposed August 8 deadline adds urgency to the situation, though its practicality remains uncertain. The Kremlin has not publicly responded, and Ukrainian officials continue to stress that any negotiations must begin with a complete withdrawal of Russian forces from occupied areas.

Although the United Nations is not directly involved in mediating the talks, it remains a key platform for international dialogue. Several Security Council members expressed cautious optimism during the session, noting that a defined timeline might help advance diplomatic progress.

With the deadline quickly approaching, attention is turning to how both Moscow and Kyiv will respond. The message from Washington is clear: peace talks must proceed without delay, and concrete outcomes are expected.
