UK Introduces eVisa System for Pakistani Students and Workers

On July 15, 2025, the United Kingdom introduced a digital eVisa system for Pakistani students and workers, replacing physical visa stickers with secure digital records linked to passports. This modernization move allows applicants to use a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account to access their visa status, improving convenience and security.

According to the British High Commission in Islamabad, the eVisa applies to main applicants in work and study categories, including long-term and short-term students (up to 11 months), Skilled Workers, Global Talent, International Sportspersons, and various Global Business Mobility routes. British High Commissioner Jane Marriott noted that this change lets applicants keep their passports while speeding up identity verification and saving time.

Applicants link their passports to a UKVI account, enabling them to share eVisa status with employers or landlords using a “view and prove” service, particularly within England. Existing physical visas remain valid until expiry, and dependent and visitor visas (for less than six months) still require physical visa stickers.

This initiative aligns with the UK’s broader strategy to digitize its border system through a phased approach. Millions have already used eVisas on select routes, and the eVisa system offers greater security by reducing document-loss risks and improving processing speed.

The reform addresses long-standing concerns of Pakistani visa applicants, who number in the tens of thousands annually. It especially benefits students and workers by simplifying travel processes and reducing administrative delays.

Although praised for efficiency, the system currently excludes dependents and general visitors, highlighting room for future expansion. The UK’s move toward secure, technology-driven immigration strengthens ties with Pakistan by making it easier for skilled professionals and students to enter—but full digital coverage across all visa types is still a work in progress.
