UN Security Council Endorses Pakistan’s Resolution on Peaceful Dispute Resolution

On July 22, 2025, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted Resolution 2788 (2025) titled “Strengthening Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes.” This marked a diplomatic success for Pakistan, which held the UNSC presidency for July. The resolution encourages countries to utilize Chapter VI of the UN Charter, emphasizing negotiation, mediation, arbitration, and judicial settlement in international disputes.

The session was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar. He emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy, stating the nation aimed to uphold its “solemn responsibility” as UNSC president. The resolution also urges enhanced cooperation with regional organizations and highlights unresolved conflicts, including Kashmir and Palestine, that threaten international stability.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised the resolution, calling peaceful dispute resolution a “lifeline” amid global law violations. He stressed that diplomacy still has the power to halt conflicts, citing crises in Gaza, Ukraine, Sudan, Haiti, and Myanmar.

During the debate, Ishaq Dar also raised concerns about India’s threats to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, which he warned posed risks to 240 million Pakistanis, a point he used to underscore the resolution’s relevance to regional tensions.

The resolution reflects Pakistan’s active, constructive role on the UNSC, reinforcing its advocacy for peace, multilateralism, and regional stability. By championing peaceful dispute mechanisms, Pakistan positions itself as a reliable advocate for international cooperation in an increasingly complex geopolitical landscape.
