US-Pakistan Ties Flourish Across Vital Sectors, Says US Consul General

The United States (US) and Pakistan are deepening their multifaceted partnership, with expanding cooperation in trade, agriculture, education, cultural preservation, and security. This strengthening bond highlights mutual interests in fostering economic growth, counter-terrorism efforts, and regional stability. This article explores the dynamic relationship and its promising trajectory.

In an exclusive interview with Express News, US Consul General in Lahore Kristin K. Hawkins emphasized the enduring US-Pakistan relationship. She stated, “Our cooperation is expanding across key sectors like agriculture, trade, education, and security, strengthening mutual support.” Bilateral trade between the two nations reached nearly $7 billion last year, with Hawkins encouraging American companies to invest in Pakistan’s information technology (IT), e-commerce, and tourism sectors during a visit to the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP).

The US Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) has invested over $8.4 million in projects such as restoring Lahore Fort and preserving Gandhara artifacts, safeguarding Pakistan’s rich heritage. Hawkins also highlighted agricultural collaboration, with experts from both nations addressing farming challenges in South Punjab and parts of the US to boost productivity and innovation.

Education remains a cornerstone of this partnership, with the English Access Micro-scholarship Program, launched in 2004, benefiting over 27,000 Pakistani students, including 6,000 from Punjab. “These students are contributing to a safer and more prosperous future for both nations,” Hawkins said. The program has expanded, reaching 1,000 new students in Punjab over the past two years. Additionally, 19 Lincoln Corners across Pakistan, including at Bahauddin Zakariya University in Multan, provide access to modern technology such as 3D printing and digital libraries, empowering youth with educational resources and fostering people-to-people ties.

Beyond these sectors, the US and Pakistan continue to enhance their security and counter-terrorism cooperation. Joint efforts include intelligence sharing, training of Pakistani security forces, and collaboration on regional counter-terrorism initiatives. Pakistan’s strategic location and its role in combating terrorism remain vital to US regional interests.

This revitalized partnership reflects a pragmatic approach under the current US administration, prioritizing economic growth and security cooperation over past tensions. Pakistan’s role as a key export market, with $8.33 billion in trade in 2022, and a recipient of $118.4 million in foreign direct investment (FDI), underscores its strategic importance. As both nations work together on counter-terrorism, renewable energy, and cultural initiatives, the US-Pakistan alliance is poised to drive prosperity and stability, helping to address regional challenges and foster a brighter future.
