Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has extended heartfelt condolences to China following deadly floods and landslides that have left dozens dead and thousands displaced in the country’s northern regions.

On July 29, 2025, Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the loss of life and widespread destruction caused by recent natural disasters in northern China, including areas around Beijing and Hebei province. In a statement posted on his official social media account and cited by Arab News and other Pakistani media outlets, Sharif conveyed sympathies on behalf of Pakistan to the victims’ families and the affected communities. Chinese authorities have reported at least 30 deaths, with ongoing rescue efforts hampered by damaged infrastructure and continued heavy rainfall.

Sharif noted Pakistan’s empathy with the Chinese people, referencing the 2022 floods in Pakistan that resulted in over 1,700 fatalities and massive displacement. He expressed confidence in the Chinese government’s ability to manage the crisis effectively under President Xi Jinping’s leadership, as reported by the Daily Times. The disaster has reportedly disrupted power supplies and communication lines, and several remote villages remain inaccessible, according to Chinese state media.

Reaffirming the enduring ties between the two countries, Sharif described the relationship as one of “iron-clad brotherhood.” This sentiment reflects decades of strategic collaboration, notably through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a central pillar of bilateral cooperation.

The Prime Minister’s statement also aligns with Pakistan’s consistent policy of supporting allies during emergencies. In May 2025, Sharif had similarly expressed condolences after landslides in China’s Guizhou province caused multiple deaths and left others missing, according to Geo.tv. Domestically, Pakistan continues to face its own seasonal monsoon-related challenges. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reported approximately 288 deaths across Pakistan since June 26, 2025, due to monsoon-related incidents, including seven fatalities within the last 24 hours, as per Dunya News and other Pakistani media.

Sharif’s message of solidarity underscores the shared vulnerability of both nations to climate-related disasters.
