On July 25, 2025, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, met with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, D.C., to reaffirm their commitment to joint efforts in combating terrorism. The discussions focused on counterterrorism, trade, and regional stability, underscoring Pakistan’s role in global security and setting the stage for deeper bilateral cooperation.

The meeting, held at the U.S. State Department, highlighted Pakistan’s contributions to counterterrorism efforts. Secretary Rubio praised Pakistan’s partnership in countering terrorism and preserving regional stability. Dar, who held the presidency of the United Nations Security Council in July 2025, emphasized the importance of enhanced collaboration against groups such as the Islamic State-Khorasan (ISIS-K). These talks occurred shortly after Rubio designated The Resistance Front (TRF), linked to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, reflecting a stringent approach to regional security threats.

Pakistan’s sacrifices in the fight against terrorism were a key point of discussion. Rubio acknowledged Islamabad’s role in facilitating the extradition of a suspect involved in the 2021 Kabul Airport attack, a move recognized in the U.S. political discourse. Dar also underscored Pakistan’s potential as an investment destination, advocating cooperation in sectors including minerals, agriculture, and technology. He stated that Pakistan was ready to deepen ties with the United States for mutual economic prosperity. The upcoming U.S.-Pakistan Counterterrorism Dialogue scheduled for August 2025 in Islamabad is expected to further strengthen this partnership.

The talks also included discussions on Pakistan’s mediation efforts with Iran, a role appreciated by Secretary Rubio as contributing to regional stability.

This meeting signals a renewed U.S.-Pakistan alliance, considered vital for addressing evolving global security challenges. The commitment by Dar and Rubio to joint action offers prospects for a coordinated response to terrorism. However, given Pakistan’s complex regional dynamics, the success of this partnership will depend on sustained mutual trust and tangible outcomes.
