On July 26, 2025, Pakistan urged an immediate ceasefire and de-escalation in the Russia-Ukraine conflict during a United Nations Security Council briefing. The statement highlighted Pakistan’s consistent advocacy for peace, emphasizing diplomacy over military action and underscoring the urgent need to protect civilians amid the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Addressing the Security Council, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, stated that “peace in Ukraine is long overdue,” noting that the conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion in March 2022, requires urgent resolution. He stressed that calls for ending the conflict should not be overshadowed by continued hostilities, advocating for sincere dialogue based on the principles of the UN Charter and international law. Pakistan’s position prioritizes de-escalation, with Jadoon asserting that “military escalation is a dead end.” He welcomed recent talks in Istanbul between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, including prisoner exchanges, but noted that substantive progress depends on genuine political will.

The briefing also outlined the severe humanitarian impact of the conflict. Miroslav Jenca, Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas, reported a three-year high in civilian casualties in June 2025, highlighting Russia’s use of over 5,000 long-range munitions and hundreds of drones in recent attacks. Joyce Msuya, UN Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator, described the situation as dire, with more than 13 million people in Ukraine requiring humanitarian assistance. Pakistan condemned attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, with Jadoon emphasizing that such actions are unjustifiable. He urged all parties to prioritize diplomacy to end the suffering, particularly in light of Ukraine’s recent withdrawal from the anti-landmine convention, which increases risks to civilians.

Pakistan’s call for peace reflects its broader commitment to global stability and experience in managing regional conflicts. By promoting dialogue and humanitarian protection, Pakistan seeks to reinforce its role as a responsible member of the international community. As the conflict continues to affect global security, Pakistan’s appeal for a ceasefire underscores the necessity of collective action to restore peace and uphold international law.
