A 24-year-old jeweller fatally shot during a robbery in Karachi’s Korangi area has been laid to rest, with his funeral drawing large crowds and causing a traffic standstill.

A 24-year-old jeweller who was gunned down during a robbery in Karachi’s Korangi district was laid to rest on Wednesday, drawing a large crowd of mourners and disrupting traffic in the area.

Abdul Mateen Muqeem, an employee at a jewellery shop in the Sarafa Market of Korangi No. 2, was fatally shot during a violent armed robbery on Tuesday. The young man’s body was taken to the Chakragoth graveyard in Korangi No. 1, where he was buried following funeral prayers held along the main road outside the market where the incident occurred.

The funeral was attended by dozens of traders, shopkeepers, local residents, and political figures, including Monem Zafar, Amir (Leader) of Jamaat-e-Islami Karachi a well-established religious and political party. As mourners gathered, traffic on the usually busy Korangi Road came to a standstill, causing long delays and congestion throughout the area.

The robbery has sparked renewed concerns over public safety and law enforcement in Karachi, where armed robberies remain a serious and persistent issue. Traders from the Sarafa Market Association expressed outrage at the lack of adequate police presence in the area, particularly in high-risk commercial zones.

Speaking to local media, a representative of the Sarafa Market Association said, “We’ve repeatedly asked for more protection, but the authorities only respond after someone is killed. How many more must die before action is taken?”

Criticism has also been levelled at the current local administration and law enforcement bodies for their slow response time and failure to prevent increasing levels of street crime. While the Pakistan People’s Party governs Sindh province, where Karachi is located, federal attention to urban crime has remained limited.

With no arrests reported as of Wednesday evening, frustration among traders and residents is rising. There have been renewed calls for Karachi police to step up patrols in sensitive commercial areas and for the federal government to recognise the worsening law and order situation in the country’s financial capital.

Abdul Mateen Muqeem’s death serves as a grim reminder of the risks ordinary citizens face in simply going about their daily work. As Karachi continues to struggle with unchecked street crime, there is growing pressure for serious, long-term reforms to policing and urban safety policies something successive governments have failed to deliver.
