The Pakistan Army has launched extensive rescue operations in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), to assist communities and tourists stranded by severe flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains. Their swift response has cleared critical routes and provided essential relief, demonstrating military efficiency amid a climate-driven crisis.

On July 22, 2025, torrential rains and a cloudburst caused widespread damage across Skardu, blocking the Skardu-Deosai road and leaving over 400 tourists stranded. Pakistan Army engineering teams worked through the night, using heavy machinery to remove debris from key routes, including access roads to Sadpara village and Sadpara Mountaineering School. Army Aviation helicopters delivered food and supplies to those trapped on Sadpara Road, earning commendation from local authorities. The Karakoram Highway (KKH), a vital trade artery, was partially restored through joint efforts by the Army, Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), and National Highway Authority (NHA), despite severe damage from landslides.

The floods, intensified by climate-induced heavy rainfall, damaged homes, crops, and infrastructure in areas including Barge Nullah, Dhagyol Nullah, and Shagri Bala Nullah in Skardu, according to Baltistan Division Police spokesperson Ghulam Muhammad. Three injuries were reported in Sadpara village, as confirmed by Skardu Rescue 1122. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued warnings for potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) in GB and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), advising residents to avoid riverbanks and low-lying areas.

The Army’s efforts, supported by GB Scouts, included airlifting stranded individuals and distributing medical supplies, reflecting a coordinated response to a disaster that has caused casualties and disrupted connectivity across the region.

The Pakistan Army’s prompt and effective action underscores its critical role in national emergencies, restoring hope and stability in flood-affected Skardu. As climate challenges escalate, these operations highlight the urgent need for improved infrastructure and preparedness to protect vulnerable communities and sustain economic resilience.
