Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched the Pakistan Business Express train service, aimed at delivering enhanced travel convenience and comfort to passengers across the country. The announcement was made during a formal event held at Lahore Railway Station, where the Prime Minister also unveiled a series of newly upgraded facilities designed to improve the overall passenger experience. The move is part of broader efforts to modernise railway infrastructure and revive confidence in public transportation.

Among the newly inaugurated facilities at Lahore Railway Station are modern escalators, a renovated family lounge, upgraded general waiting areas, and a Commercially Important Persons (CIP) lounge. These additions are also supported by improved digital access, including the provision of WiFi connectivity within the station premises. In his remarks, the Prime Minister praised the efforts of Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi and the Pakistan Railways management for what he described as a step toward meeting international standards in public transport services.

The Pakistan Business Express is designed to offer a more premium travel option for business and regular travellers, featuring upgraded coaches and more reliable scheduling. It is part of a broader narrative to reposition Pakistan Railways as a dependable and efficient mode of transportation amid growing concerns over urban congestion and limited road infrastructure. Although Pakistan’s rail system has long struggled with neglect and underinvestment, the newly introduced service attempts to bridge the gap between expectations and reality, offering a more user-friendly experience.

However, critics note that while such developments are commendable, sustainable progress will require consistent policy direction and financial discipline beyond the scope of inauguration ceremonies. The real challenge lies in maintaining these facilities, ensuring transparency in operations, and extending similar improvements to routes and stations beyond major urban centres. The Pakistan Business Express train may symbolise a step in the right direction, but long-term transformation of the country’s rail sector demands continued commitment, professional oversight, and strategic planning. If supported by sound execution and accountability, this initiative could restore the public’s trust in railway travel and serve as a gateway for broader transport reform in Pakistan.
