Widow of Fallen Police Officer Evicted After Years of Broken Promises

A widow who lost her husband in the line of duty is now fighting for her family’s survival, this time, not against crime or misfortune, but against the very system her husband served. Despite promises of long-term support from police officials, she was forcibly evicted from her government-allotted residence last week, allegedly under direct orders from law enforcement personnel themselves.

Constable Rustam Ali Shahid, who passed away from cardiac arrest while on duty at Risala Police Station in 2017, left behind a widow and three young sons. Following his death, officials offered reassurances that his family would not be forgotten. However, nearly a decade later, those promises have proven hollow. The late officer’s widow shared with The Express Tribune how institutional neglect and abuse of power have upended her life.

Earlier this year, the family suffered a devastating fire that destroyed their home and all possessions. Using the limited compensation from her husband’s death, she rebuilt, rewired, and refurnished the home, only to face another blow. The same home, located in police quarters, was re-allocated to Constable Kashif, a driver for the Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Karachi. Within weeks, she was served official notice to vacate the premises.

Attempts to seek clarity or intervention from senior police leadership went unanswered. Then last Thursday, she was summoned to Meethadar Police Station, allegedly to discuss her situation. After being made to wait for hours without meeting any officer, she received a frantic call from her daughter: police had forcibly entered their home, dragged her children outside, and thrown their belongings into the street.

Residents corroborated the account, telling The Express Tribune that her daughters were treated with open disregard and humiliation. Upon returning, the widow found her home occupied and her family’s possessions in disarray.

This incident has ignited public concern over the treatment of families of fallen officers, and it raises questions about the integrity of the current administration’s commitment to justice, especially for its own.

Despite repeated calls for reform and accountability, this case reflects a broader failure in how state institutions prioritize self-interest and political maneuvering over human dignity. When a widow of a deceased officer is made homeless at the hands of those who wear the same uniform her husband once wore with honor, one must ask: what, if anything, is sacred anymore?
